Todd Monroe has granted us permission to produce his five different versions of the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range's first order of wide vision steel cabooses.
Once the final changes are complete, they will be available on our website.
Prototype information is from Daniel P. Holbrook's definitive work on Missabe rolling stock.
Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Equipment, 1883-2004
This book is not only a must have for any Missabe fan, but a fine example of what a book on railroad equipment should look like.
The Missabe ordered steel wide vision cabooses from International Railway Car Company in 1952 and again in 1974 (by then International Car Company) .
Todd's design is of the first batch from 1952 including some interesting variations. Due to height restrictions at Minnetac, the couplas were removed from two cars (C-209, C-210) had all weather side windows added such as the C-210 shown in the photo by Mark Simonson above left.
Four other cars (C-204, C-205, C-218 and C-219) were converted to a bay window cars for similar reasons for use on T-Bird trains.
Further, both the bay window and cupola versions had their roof walks and end ladders removed.
C-200 is International's prototype wide vision caboose and is slightly different. That model is not represented.
Unlike later wide vision cabooses these are a riveted designs.
Todd has captured all these versions except the C-200.
